Austrian weapons instructor ‘accidentally’ kills police officer

A police firearms instructor in Austria is under investigation after deliberately shooting a fellow officer during training.

Prosecutors in the southern city of Graz said the 39-year-old coach was handing officers training weapons.

The trainer reportedly forgot he was carrying his service firearm, which was loaded into his holster.

During the exercise, he tried to establish that one of the officers was standing in a supine position and shot him at close range. Prosecutors said the 27-year-old police officer was fatally wounded.

A spokesman for the attorney general’s office said there was no doubt that Wednesday’s incident was a “tragic accident”.

The trainer is now being investigated on suspicion of gross negligence murder.
