Category 4 Hurricane Ian heads toward Florida after hitting Cuba

Heavy rain hit Florida’s west coast as Hurricane Ian, a powerful Category 4 storm, approached toward the United States on Wednesday.

Meteorologists warn of life-threatening storms and catastrophic flooding in the coming hours.

Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall on Florida’s west coast late Wednesday, possibly even as a Category 5 hurricane according to Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

“It will probably make landfall as a Category 5. But this is clearly a very strong hurricane that will have major impacts … So, this is going to be a bad, bad, two days,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday.

The storm was blowing winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, just under a Category 5 strength. His eyewall had begun to move on the shore.

Hurricane Ian has already hit Cuba, killing at least two people and causing extensive damage to infrastructure.

The entire island lost access to electricity, leaving 11 million people in the dark. Cuban authorities said they had begun to restore power in certain parts of the country.
