Consumer confidence in the Netherlands September 2022

Consumer confidence fell to -59.0 in September from -54.0 in August. The September result was the weakest sentiment ever. Thus, the index moved below the zero threshold, which indicates a deterioration in sentiment among consumers.

The general deterioration was caused by increased pessimism about the economic climate in the past and the next 12 months. The propensity to buy also suffered a setback in the month, as consumers’ opinions about their financial situation deteriorated in the past and next year. Consumers were also less likely to purchase expensive items.

Members of the FocusEconomics Consensus forecast committee see private consumption expanding 5.2% in 2022, unchanged from last month’s forecast. In 2023, the commission expects private consumption to grow by 0.2%.
