Crowds welcome the first train from Kyiv to Kherson since the Russians left the city

On Saturday, November 19, jubilant crowds gathered to greet the first train to arrive in Kherson from Kyiv since Russian forces left the city. On 17 November, Ukraine Railways announced that services to the eastern city would resume for the first time since the Russian invasion. The train left Kyiv the next day and arrived in Kherson on 19 November. Video from Ukrainian radio station Suspilne shows the train arriving at Kherson main station as people wave national flags and gather to watch on platforms and a footbridge. Chants “Slava Ukrainian!” (Glory to Ukraine) can be heard. A delegation from the European Commission, headed by its Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, attended the launch event in Kyiv the night before. It was reported by the local news agency Vechirny Kyiv that a concert was held at the Central Railway Station as part of the event. The report added that about 200 passengers boarded the train, including the Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Oleksandr Tkachenko.
