Details of the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok revealed

Volkswagen has drawn up battle plans to make the new Amarok a must-have in 2023.

Based on the new Ford Ranger, the new Amarok represents a major leap over the previous model.

It shares basic underpinnings and diesel engines with the Ranger, plus new safety features including automatic emergency braking, active cruise control and blind spot monitoring.

VW’s best-selling model is also likely to share the 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel, an engine that sends 184 kW and 600 Nm to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

But it won’t get the 292 kW/283 Nm V6 petrol engine exclusively offered in Ford’s Ranger Raptor.

Ford has chosen not to offer the Australian Ranger with the 2.3-liter turbocharged petrol engine found on some Amarok models, which delivers 222 kW and 452 Nm of performance.

But the cars are not identical.

A Volkswagen machine wears the butcher’s design formed by the Melbourne design team.

It has the same basic interior as the Ranger, although the higher-end Amarok models have more 10-way power seat adjustment than the Ranger’s 8-way chairs.

The Volkswagen’s 12-inch digital instrument panel display is larger than the 8-inch readout standard fitted to the Ranger.

The Amarok’s high-quality variants ride on 21-inch wheels that are much larger than the 18-inch Ranger Wildtrak rims, which can bring back more of the car-like precision than the steering wheel shared with VW’s passenger cars.

Volkswagen says the new machine, which was built in South Africa as opposed to the Ranger from Thailand, benefits from shorter and more frequent shipping routes than the old model, which came from Argentina.

According to VW, this “ensures a more stable supply”.

But it would also mean that the Amarok is subject to a 5 percent car import tariff that does not apply to a Ranger built in Thailand, a factor that likely makes VW more expensive than its Blue Oval cousin.

Volkswagen will reveal pricing for the Amarok approaching its official debut in the first quarter of 2023.
