‘It was a very special day’: Reflections on the Queen’s first Australian tour

About 68 years ago, the Queen became the first reigning monarch to visit Australia – a tour that became one of 16 visits to the country.

Wagga resident Dell Bungay was one of the school kids lucky enough to meet the Queen on her 1954 tour.

“It was a very exciting time,” Ms Bungay told Sky News Australia “the city was a real buzz.”

“She’s so special to us…we all loved the Queen.

“It was a very special day for Waja.”
