Meghan Markle’s new podcast, “The Archetypes,” is about diving into “the labels trying to hold women back.”
And this week, the Queen came face to face with her misconceptions about the word “diva”, when singer Mariah Carey used the term to describe the Duchess of Sussex in real time.
During a conversation in the second episode of Meghan’s new Archewell Audio and Spotify series, Carey said she sometimes uses the term “singer” to refer to “laughs,” before praising the Queen as a “singer” in her own right – leaving Meghan confused.
“I think it’s really important for people to remember – that there might be this character, and yes, the ‘divine’ thing we can play with,” Meghan said during the chat.
“I mean, it’s not something I call, but for you, it was a big part of–” King began saying, before the singer walked in.
“You give us singer moments sometimes, Megan,” said Carey. “Don’t act like…”
“I do? What kind of singer moments am I giving you?” asked the Duchess, laughing.
“Visual, a lot of it is visible,” Curry said.
“Oh, that’s the look,” Meghan replied. “Look, here’s the thing—I’m tying it differently.”
“Okay, I know,” the “Always Be My Baby” singer continued. “But let’s pretend you weren’t so pretty and didn’t have everything and didn’t often have great outfits—you probably wouldn’t get as many Diva items.”
At the end of the podcast, Meghan explained how she felt the moment Carey called her a “singer.”
“Everything was going smoothly – I mean, really well – until that moment happened,” Megan said. “I don’t know about you, but that stopped me when you called me a singer.”
“You can’t see me, of course, but I’m starting to sweat a little. I’m starting to shiver in my seat at this quiet revolution.” “this is not true! why would you say that? My mind was honestly going around this nonsense [Carey] You must have read or clicked on it to make her say that.”
“I kept thinking at that moment, Was my girl wrecked on her way to a fleeting demise? Does she really not see me?? ‘ said the royal.
But Meghan made it clear that she eventually realized that Carrie was complimenting her.
“She must have felt my nervous laugh, and you would all hear it too. And she just jumped right in to make sure I was completely clear,” Megan said. I meant it as ‘elegant’ and ‘ambitious’.
“I meant ‘the singer’ as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig,” Megan said.
The Duchess of Sussex’s first Spotify project is expected to include 12 episodes in total. The first episode featured tennis star Serena Williams, the girlfriend of the former “Sutts” actor.
Next week, audiences will hear from actor, writer and producer Mindy Kaling, who appeared in a clip at the end of Tuesday’s episode.
Not all guests were revealed, but audiences can also expect to hear talk show host and comedian Ziwe Fumudoh, heard on a clip during the first episode.
