The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is set to provide Wi-Fi for all 191 New York City landlines and 21 Staten Island rail stations in a 10-year project that finally adds coverage to 418 miles of track.
The $600 million infrastructure will be built by Transit Wireless, which has been working with the city for nearly a decade to provide the underground service — and it currently serves 281 subway stations in the city.
According to The New York Times, Transit Wireless plans to pay for the project through data collection, licensing fees, and leasing fiber-optic cables to AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile — and riders must be carrier customers to connect to the service.
The New York-based communications infrastructure company has not yet revealed which lines will be completed first, but passengers will be able to arrive when each section is completed.

More than three million people ride the New York City subway system every day, and providing service has been a long and ongoing project for officials.

Transit Wireless was founded in 2005 and began building the infrastructure needed to provide cellular service throughout Manhattan.
The company’s first phase launched in 2013, which added service to 30 stations in Manhattan.

The second phase began in October 2014 which covered all of Queens and many other terminals in Manhattan, including Bryant Park, Herald Square and Grand Central Terminal.
Three years later, all 279 subway stations were operating, and in 2020, the company brought the connection to the Route L that runs between Brooklyn and Manhattan — the first tunnel in the system to be fully connected.
Transit Wireless is now connecting the rest of the railways. Ultimately, it will cost Transit Wireless $1 billion to provide service to all stations above and the metro.
“This latest advance in technology will coordinate with other work throughout the system to outfit hundreds of miles of tunnels to enable cellular service between stations and support the MTA’s operating needs,” Jamie Torres Springer, MTA’s chief of construction and development, said in a statement.
“We look forward to closing the remainder of the cellular coverage and data connectivity gaps in our subway system.”
The addition of wi-fi and cell phone came in 2017 when former Governor Andrew Cuomo announced upgrades to the century-old transportation system.
Cuomo said $29 billion was earmarked for the plan, which also added digital countdown clocks, subway car replacements and portable charging cases on metro cars.
Across the US in Northern California, officials plan to have wi-fi at all 50 stations by 2024 with the help of Bay Area Transit.
And in London, passengers at each terminal will be able to arrive by the end of 2024 as well.
