In an exclusive interview with TheSun, the singer opens up about her new musical success and the inspiration behind it We are going up.
Congratulations on releasing We are going up! What does switching from TikTok to music look like?
“Honestly, it feels natural. Since I was 14, I have always taken part in competitions, especially in high school. I have always done covers and post them online like YouTube and such.
“So being in the music industry it’s not new to me, especially when my mom is also a singer in the industry. So it’s not really new to me. But the new part is that I signed under Universal Music Malaysia, which is definitely amazing that I’m in the team “.
Were you worried about the release?
“Yeah. I got really nervous because I had a song before but that was just on my own. Although it felt exciting at the time, I didn’t get as excited as I did, We are going up. This is because this is her first professionally performed single.
“It’s under Universal Music Malaysia, and it’s definitely like a climax where I’m talking, ‘Oh my God, that’s cool. And so, I was nervous to release it. The other fact that made me nervous was that I wrote the song with producer Brian.
“And the lyrics and the song are something I can relate to because I was actually in the situation when I wrote We are going up. So, releasing something you were dealing with felt like I was telling a secret. So, that was exciting but it’s all been through and it’s all good now.”
What is the We are going up all about?
“We are going up It is basically all about a complicated friendship. It’s like a love-hate relationship. It’s one of those relationships where you’re in a good place with someone and you guys act like you’re dating and in love, but at the same time, you guys don’t know what you are. Like it’s too complicated. So, that’s the gist of the song.”
What inspired the melody and lyrics?
There’s a part in the song that says, ‘I’m totally blue. I feel out of my mind, because I love you, but I don’t know how to try. So, when that happened, I felt at some point, should I make this sad or happy?
“But I’m the kind of person where the lyrics are still, no matter how sad or warm or sad or sad, I still want to make it at an upbeat pace. To impress people when they listen to it.”
“So when we came out with a tune, I felt we needed to do something happy. As for the lyrics, I thought of writing about a situation I could relate to, which of course is complicated love and friendship hate.”
Are you still at that stage?
Well, I honestly say I kind of got over it. Yeah, I finally settled things. In fact, when the song came out, the guy was like, ‘Woah, well, you literally wrote a song about me. It’s crazy that you’re telling your story to the whole world.’ That’s crazy !'”
what do you wish We are going up To express you to the listeners?
“I wish We are going up It will help listeners get to know me more and know that I have a lot of stories to tell. And I really wish they knew the way I sing my songs. This is because it doesn’t just depend on some random songs I just sing or some random beats.
“It actually looks like something I know people will always want to relate to. So, I hope that whenever they want to relate to something, they can turn to my music and deal with it.”
