Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan ‘biggest potential flashpoint in the world’

Sky News host Chris Kenny says the Taiwan Strait is “the world’s largest potential flashpoint”.

Kenney said that when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan earlier in the week, she “defied warnings and reprimands from Beijing” — but had to “go the long way” toward the nation because of the military mobilization.

“Let’s go back to first principles, and make the clear point that any American politician, indeed anyone in the free world, should be allowed to visit Taiwan at any time,” he said.

“Beijing has no right to believe that it can pick, choose and dictate who can visit Taiwan.”

Kenny said Pelosi’s visit – although incompletely addressed – showed that the US “will not be bullied and the people of Taiwan will not be abandoned”.

“They have remained free and prosperous because they did not go beyond the declarations of independence, and because the liberal democracies have recognized a delicate position regarding one China and Taiwan,” he said.
