Possible imminent strike at Johns Hopkins Hospital

Staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital told 11 News that a strike was imminent. One employee told 11 News that they plan to strike on October 1. Non-union employees said they received an email Tuesday from the hospital saying they may need to fill in for these shifts if a layoff occurs. Negotiations between Johns Hopkins Hospital and United Healthcare Workers East have been going on for months. The union represents about 1,800 of the hospital’s 11,000 employees. They range from basic support services to patient care functions, including environmental services, patient transportation, and surgical technicians, among others. The hospital confirms that their current contract expires in 10 days, and non-union employees tell 11 news that they received a letter Tuesday from Human Resources indicating these contract negotiations, saying that if no agreement is reached by September 30, it looks like the employees may be. It has been pulled from other areas for coverage and says the hospital’s plan is to have these employees fill two to three shifts a week and employees will not be expected to exceed the number of hours in a typical work week. Some of the non-union employees who received the email are concerned. “The fact that they are more willing to take us away from our responsibilities to our patients rather than give these workers the value they deserve is disgusting,” said one, who asked not to be identified. Kim Hope, vice president of communications at Ward Johns Hopkins Medicine, in part, saying: “As is standard in any late-stage contract negotiation process, the hospital prepares staff to ensure that there is no disruption to the patient experience in the event of a strike. Focus on providing the best possible care to our patients as well as reaching a fair deal for our employees.” Those at the hospital said they hope to reach an agreement before the contract expires on September 30. Lisa Brown, executive vice president of 1199SEIU, sent a statement Wednesday afternoon to 11 News, saying: “The union and management are conducting scheduled negotiations on Thursday and Friday of this week, and the union hopes to settle the contract amicably.
