Revealing the daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to the world in her first public appearance

Seoul, South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of a “new type” of ICBM on Friday, along with his young daughter, whose existence has not been previously confirmed.

Incredible photos released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) appear to show Kim holding hands with the girl, while an ICBM sits on its portable launch pad nearby.

The KCNA claimed that the “new” missile seen by the couple was a Hwasong-17, and said it was launched from Pyongyang International Airport, and flew 999.2 kilometers (621 miles).

Japan warned after the launch on Friday that the new missile appeared to have a potential range to reach the US mainland.

Kim said the aim of the test was to “clearly demonstrate” his country’s ability to respond to what he called “hysterical war-of-aggression maneuvers by enemies seeking to destroy peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” according to a KCNA report.

“Kim Jong-un solemnly declared that if the enemies continue to pose threats to the DPRK, and often use nuclear strike means, our party and government will resolutely deal with nuclear weapons and on full confrontation with all-out confrontation,” the KCNA said.

Friday’s launch, which landed about 210 kilometers (130 miles) west of the Japanese island of Oshima, according to Japanese officials, wasn’t the first time North Korea had launched an ICBM that experts and officials saw could theoretically reach the United States.

Friday’s missile was shorter in height and distance compared to Pyongyang’s March 24 missile test, which had the highest altitude and longest duration of any North Korean missile ever tested, according to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) at the time. The Korean Central News Agency reported that this missile reached an altitude of 6,248.5 kilometers (3,905 miles) and flew a distance of 1,090 kilometers (681 miles).

And in 2017, then US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said a missile launched by North Korea that year showed the ability to hit “everything in the world”.

Despite the missile’s theoretical range, Pyongyang’s ability to place a nuclear warhead on top of it and fire it at the target remains unproven.

Ballistic missiles are launched into space before falling back to Earth. Experts have yet to see definitive proof that North Korea can obtain a warhead for a successful fiery re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Kim’s threats to the United States and South Korea were not new either.

After a missile test in October, the North Korean leader warned his opponents that his nuclear forces were fully prepared for “actual war.”

“Our nuclear combat forces … have once again demonstrated their full readiness for an actual war to bring the enemies under their control,” Kim said in a report by the Korean Central News Agency.

Little is known about the private life of Kim Jong Un or his family.

The news report on Saturday did not mention the name of Kim’s daughter, who first appeared in state media. But in 2013, former basketball star Dennis Rodman told the Guardian that Kim had a “child” named “Joo A.”

Rodman said he has spent time with the family, describing Kim as a “good father” and that he has spoken to Kim’s wife, Ri Sol-ju.

“I held their baby Ju-Ae and talked to Mrs. Ri as well,” he told the newspaper.

Speculation arose in 2012 that Ri might be pregnant after a photo carried by state media showed her wearing a long trench coat that may have been hiding a bump. But the North Korean authorities kept silent about this.

Kim and Ri’s marriage was not announced by state media until July 2012, about three years after South Korean intelligence believed the wedding had taken place.

But that changed in 2018, when North Korean state media awarded her the title “Respected First Lady,” a step above the “companion” previously used and a sign, according to analysts, that she was carving out her own personality. religious sect

Kim and Ri have three children together, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service.

North Korea has been ruled as a hereditary dictatorship since its founding in 1948 by Kim Il-sung. His son, Kim Jong Il, took over after his father died in 1994. Kim Jong Un assumed power 17 years later when Kim Jong Il died.
