Russian-born fears death after Australian visa expires

Russian-born Ludmila Kovaleva fears she could face imprisonment or death in Russia if Australia’s Department of Immigration does not renew her visa – despite multiple rejections since she fled Moscow in 2010.

“The final option is for Minister Andrew Giles to exercise authority and grant her a visa to stay here where she can live in safety,” says Simon Gaines, a lawyer.

Mr Gaines said there was a “problem with the system” within the immigration department that too often rejected the “most deserving” cases.

“We hope MPs, senators, community leaders and religious leaders can intervene on someone’s behalf,” he told Sky News Australia.
