The BEA released its auto sales estimate for July this morning.
This graph shows heavy truck sales since 1967 using data from BEA. The dashed line is the seasonally adjusted annual sales rate for July 2022 (SAAR).
Heavy truck sales really collapsed during the Great Recession, dropping to 180,000 SAAR in May 2009. Then, heavy truck sales soared to a new all-time high of 570,000 SAAR in April 2019.

Heavy truck sales reached 477,000 in July, up from 470,000 in June, and up from 440,000 in July 2021.
Usually, sales of heavy trucks drop sharply before a recession. Sales were strong in July.
