Special Report: ‘Hunting Evil: Al Qaeda Leader Killed’

Sky News spoke to former top US military and intelligence officials and revealed details of how one of the world’s most wanted men was hunted down and how the killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri changed the global fight against terrorism. US President Joe Biden announced this week that the al-Qaeda leader – and one of the masterminds behind the September 11 attacks, which killed thousands of people and devastated the country – was killed in a drone strike in Kabul. According to a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, CIA operatives have been on al-Zawahiri’s tail for about three years and have been on high alert since the withdrawal of US forces last August from Afghanistan. In April, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan briefed Joe Biden on a plan to kill the al-Qaeda leader. At the beginning of July, the plan was handed to the president, presenting him with a box that officials say contains a scale model of al-Zawahiri’s home. On July 25, Biden gave the order to carry out the plan.
