Taiwan warns that China’s recent military exercises are a rehearsal for a real invasion.

The disputed island has, in recent days, been surrounded by Chinese military ships and shown power on Beijing’s behalf.

The Chinese Communist Party was openly angry at the visit of a congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island last week.

The delegation continued the visit in direct opposition to China’s demands for the United States to abort the meeting.

After Pelosi’s departure, the Chinese navy and air force began conducting military exercises in six regions around Taiwan with some overlapping Taiwan’s territorial waters.

The United States responded by spreading Several warships in the region.

US officials, including high-ranking members of President Biden’s government, have acknowledged the legitimacy of China’s threats to Taiwan.

Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken said China’s military exercises, including the country’s recent missile launches into the Taiwan Strait and Japan’s economic zone, represented a “significant escalation.”

“China has chosen to overreact and use House Speaker Pelosi’s visit as a pretext to increase provocative military activity in and around the Taiwan Strait,” he told a group of reporters at the ASEAN conference on Friday.

Japan, an ally of both Taiwan and the United States in East Asia, has expressed its own concerns.

Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kiichi said the missiles were “threatened.” Japan’s national security and the souls of the Japanese people, which we strongly condemn.”

The problem in Japan is compounded by the island nation’s lack of an official standing army, which is prohibited by its constitution. Japan maintains a small “defense force” for protection.

China often threatens to annex Taiwan by force, if necessary, while Japan and the United States continue to increase their military preparedness for a possible response to such an attack.
