The arrest of the mafia boss provides hope to attack the survivor

Italy’s No. 1 fugitive, Matteo Messina Denaro, the convicted mafia boss who ordered some of the country’s most gruesome killings, was arrested Monday in a private clinic in Sicily after three decades on the run, paramilitary police said.

Messina Denaro was arrested at a Palermo clinic where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed medical condition, according to Carabinieri Gen. Pasquale Angelosanto, who heads the police force’s special operations squad.

Messina Denarau was young when he hid, about 60 years old now. With a strong base near the western port city of Trapani in Sicily, he was considered the boss of Sicily’s Cosa Nostra even if he was on the run.

He was the last of three long-time high-ranking mafia bosses who had eluded capture for decades. Hundreds of police officers over the years have been assigned to track him down.

Euronews’ Giorgia Orlandi spoke to a survivor of the Mafia attack and the head of the Caponeto Foundation, Giuseppe Antosi, about the importance of Denaro’s arrest.
