The Cincinnati Zoo says Fiona Walker hippos are breeding

Months after a baby hippopotamus was born at the Cincinnati Zoo, there have been some new developments at Hippo Cove. Officials from the Cincinnati Zoo posted on members’ Facebook pages saying that hippos Fiona and Tucker are breeding. “It happens sometime,” zoo officials said in the mail. Zoo officials said Fiona is now reaching the age at which she is sexually mature and is currently on birth control because the zoo is not ready to add a blower at this time, officials said. The post continued: “Fiona, and all hippos, are very aware when they need to surface to catch their breath. She can maneuver away from Tucker if she needs to.” Fiona’s mom Baby Fritz welcomed her baby hippopotamus in August after breeding her with Tucker in December. Fritz is Baby’s second child, after Fiona, who was born in 2017. The feisty hippopotamus was born on January 24, 2017, at the Cincinnati Zoo, six weeks before she was due. She weighed only 29 pounds, about 25 pounds lighter than the lowest recorded birth weight for this species. The normal range is 55-120 pounds. She has since grown to a healthy weight and is preparing to celebrate her sixth birthday in January.
