The FAA orders a ground stop for US domestic departures after a system outage

Flights across the United States were delayed or canceled on Wednesday, January 11, after a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) outage forced the agency to postpone domestic flights. The FAA said Wednesday morning it was working to reinstate the Air Mission System notice, which alerts pilots to potential flight operations problems, and ordered all US airlines to delay domestic departures until 9 a.m. ET. “Operations across the national airspace system have been impacted,” it said. Flight Aware has listed more than 4,300 delays and 761 cancellations for US flights. The FAA later said the ground station had been lifted and air traffic was gradually returning to normal.
