TikTok still irresistible? 5 steps to increase your family’s privacy now

Despite how powerful it is for those who engage in entertaining videos and learn new tips, TikTok poses a growing threat to our privacy and security.

TikTok has gained a leading position in the world of social media platforms. All the cool kids use TikTok. And most of them don’t bat an eye while laughing, liking, and sharing video after video.

It is addictive, informative and fun for millions. TikTok, more than other social networks, comes at a massive trade-off for your privacy and security because of how and what it collects about your life. The threat posed by TikTok is so severe that some countries have banned it altogether. It is not uncommon for parents who work for big tech companies to ban their children from using TikTok.

Ask this question

Am I okay with Communist China’s government having access to my child’s intimate personal details, knowing what catches their eye, and always keeping track of their whereabouts?

That’s not all TikTok is going after for your family’s security and privacy. They surreptitiously scrape bits and pieces of your life to deliver videos they learned you would watch and turn you into a sexy ad target. This part is the obvious trade-off that we would expect in a data mining financial model that is standard for every major tech media company.

The Chinese government can access your data from TikTok

The troubling part that is unique to TikTok is that it is owned by ByteDance’s parent company whose home is in mainland China. And in that country, government laws require ByteDance to grant access to its data for any reason and without any kind of court order or injunction. TikTok confirms that it is operated independently of ByteDance but it has already been determined what data is moving from its US servers to mainland China.

So what, right? TikTok collects a massive trove of data which it then processes through an automated algorithm to perfect aspects of your life in extraordinary detail. TikTok has been known to record the device you’re using, your location, IP address, search history, everything in all your messages, what you’ve been watching, for how long, biometric information including your face and voice prints, who you know and how you interact with them.

TikTok knows more about you than you can imagine

The sophisticated algorithms that drive social networks like TikTok can more easily identify the topics and emotional tones that grab your attention.

All this crafting of your communications and interactions makes it an easy target for TikTok to steer in one direction or the other to see what you’ll interact with like a puppet. It may sound like science fiction, but it’s the primary reason many Silicon Valley executives don’t let their kids use TikTok and many other social media platforms.
