Why did more people die during the summer in the European Union than expected?

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people have died across Europe and the rest of the world.

And while COVID-19 deaths have dropped dramatically since countries began rolling out vaccines, excess deaths have not disappeared within the European Union.

In July and August 2022, more people died in the European Union than in the same period in 2020 and 2021.

There are two main theories as to why this happened: heat waves and a healthcare backlog created during the pandemic.
